In 2015 I found myself in Small Claims court with a gentleman who breached an agreement. After numerous attempts of contacting him without success I had no other choice, so I thought, but to go to Small Claims court. After about six months the day was here; we both had to appear in court.
Sitting in Small Claims court for the first time I was extremely nervous and just didn’t know what to expect. Finally, our case was called. As we approached the respective sides of the court the judge introduced himself and asked me to explain my situation. After doing so, the judge thought the issue could be settled easily through mediation. I had no idea what that meant. We were led down the hall to meet in a room where a Mediator was waiting for us. I heard his side of story about some financial constraints. I was able to understand his perspective. In addition, the Mediator helped us get to a payment plan amenable to both parties. I was so excited how efficient the process turned out to be .
I made it home and immediately googled " how to be a mediator in Maryland". I came across an organization looking for individuals to participate in mediation training. I attended the training a few months later and loved it!.,,. I’ve been volunteering and conducting mediations ever since. Later, I completed advanced training for Parenting Plan mediations along with Permanency Planning (foster care) mediations. It’s truly a calling for me! I am so blessed to have found my passion; to be able to help families, friends, couples and businesses with underlying disputes in an effort to create a "New Beginning”.
